BOC Plans to Build Carbon-Capture Network in Northeast England

(Bloomberg) — BOC Group Ltd. and partners plan to build a
carbon-capture and storage network in Teesside, northeast
England, to siphon polluting emissions from industries in the
area.

The Teesside Collective, comprising BOC, Sahaviriya Steel
Industries U.K. Ltd., GrowHow and Lotte Chemical U.K. Ltd., aim
to trap about a quarter of Teesside’s emissions and bury them
under the North Sea, according to a plan published Wednesday.
The network may operate by 2024, the group said in an e-mailed
statement.

“For many industries, carbon capture and storage will be
the only long-term way to cut carbon and stay competitive in a
low-carbon economy,” Michelle Hubert, head of energy and
climate change at the Confederation of British Industry, said in
the statement.

The U.K. has a target to cut emissions 80 percent by 2050
from 1990 levels. The collective has initial funding from the
government’s Department of Energy and Climate Change.
