Levelized onshore wind auction bids in EMEA

Source: Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Note: LCOE and bids are based on expected commercial operation date.

The results of the first French onshore wind auction are in and the sector has managed to show a measure of cost reduction. We calculate a levelized bid of $67.40 per megawatt-hour (57.23 euros per megawatt-hour) in 2017 dollars for French projects expected to come online in 2020/2021. Despite being 21 percent higher than the levelized bid for the first German onshore wind auction, for France this is good progress given that the existing FiT was 82 euros per megawatt-hour. Unlike in Germany, developers in France cannot make a bet on future technology cost reduction. Bidders are locked-in to using older turbines with smaller rotor diameters that they listed during the permitting application.
