(Bloomberg) — Southern Co., owner of Georgia’s largest
utility, agreed to build a 52-megawatt solar plant in
Mississippi with Origis Energy, its third in the state.
Southern’s Mississippi unit will receive the electricity
and renewable-energy credits from the solar farm in Sumrall,
Atlanta-based Southern said in a statement Monday. Terms weren’t
disclosed.
The project will give Southern’s Mississippi Power unit
more than 100 megawatts of solar capacity, after announcing
April 23 plans for two power plants with a total of 53 megawatts
of capacity.
The Mississippi Public Service Commission must approve the
plants, which may be operational by the end of next year.
“Adding a third renewable project continues the company’s
commitment to having a diverse generation portfolio,”
Mississippi Power Chief Executive Officer Ed Holland said in the
statement.
