SSE Studies Whether Battersea Landmark Can Tap Heat From River

(Bloomberg) — SSE Plc is studying whether the River Thames
in London can provide heat for a development at the landmark
Battersea Power Station.

SSE Enterprise Utilities will undertake a feasibility study
for the Battersea Power Station Development Company Ltd. to
ascertain whether installing heat pumps that harness warmth from
the river can be used to generate enough heat for about 4,000
new homes and businesses, it said Wednesday in a statement on
its website.

“We need to make the most of the vast amount of clean,
renewable heat that lays dormant and unused in our rivers, lakes
and seas,” Ed Davey, energy and climate change secretary, said
in the statement. “Doing this will help contribute to an energy
mix that maximizes clean, reliable home-grown resources rather
than relying on foreign fossil fuels.”
